From analyzing sensitive intelligence to engineering complex systems, from teaching young minds to exploring the philosophical depths of consciousness, my path has been defined by a relentless curiosity about the nature of reality. This is the story of how a kid from a struggling family, a descendant of Dust Bowl survivors, found his voice by asking the questions that matter most.
From Crypto Specialist to Storyteller
My time in the USAF was transformative. As a crypto specialist, I was immersed in a world of information, secrets, and high-stakes analysis. It was a crash course in critical thinking, pattern recognition, and understanding how narratives—both true and false—can shape world events. This experience provided an invaluable foundation for writing thrillers, where information is a weapon and reality is often a matter of perspective.
But the military did more than just provide material for future novels. It instilled in me a discipline and a global perspective that have been essential to my success. It taught me that with structure and determination, any obstacle can be overcome. This mindset was critical when I later pursued a degree in engineering, a field that demands precision, logic, and a systematic approach to problem-solving.
The Educator and the Engineer
After my military service, I transitioned into the civilian world, first as an engineer and then as an educator. These roles may seem disparate, but they are united by a common thread: the desire to understand and explain complex systems. Whether I was designing a technical solution or teaching a classroom of students, my goal was to make the complex accessible and the abstract concrete.
My years as a teacher were particularly formative. They taught me the power of storytelling to engage, inspire, and educate. I saw firsthand how a well-crafted narrative could illuminate difficult concepts and spark a lifelong love of learning. This is a principle I apply to all my work, from my STEM-focused children’s books to my deep dives into quantum physics.
A Foundation of Resilience
My personal history is a story of resilience. My family’s roots are in the Dust Bowl, a period of profound hardship that forged a legacy of perseverance. I grew up in a family that valued hard work and education, but financial struggles were a constant reality. These early experiences taught me the importance of self-reliance, resourcefulness, and the value of education as a path to transformation. These lessons appear throughout my memoir “Against All Odds,” which chronicles how determination and self-belief can overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
The military offered me opportunities I never would have encountered otherwise. It provided structure, purpose, and the chance to serve something larger than myself. More importantly, it exposed me to experiences and perspectives that would have remained forever foreign to a kid from a struggling family.
Every hardship I faced—financial struggle, academic challenges, the demands of military service—became raw material for my writing. Adversity teaches lessons that comfort never can. It forces you to question assumptions, develop mental toughness, and find meaning in difficulty.
Why I Write
At its core, my writing serves a single purpose: to invite readers to question their assumptions about reality.
Whether I’m crafting a military thriller that explores information warfare, a science fiction trilogy that imagines humanity’s quantum future, or a philosophical treatise on consciousness, I’m asking the same fundamental question: What if everything you think you know is incomplete?
My military experience taught me that reality is constructed—that the stories we tell ourselves about the world shape our experience of it. My research into consciousness and quantum physics suggests that this constructive process goes deeper than social conditioning or political propaganda. Reality itself may be participatory, with consciousness playing an active role in determining what we experience.
These aren’t just abstract philosophical musings. They have profound implications for how we live, what we value, and what we believe is possible. If consciousness shapes reality, then we have far more agency than we typically assume. If our perceptions are malleable, then transformation becomes not just possible but inevitable.
The Journey Continues
Twenty published books later, I’m still asking questions. Still researching. Still writing.
My latest projects continue exploring the intersection of science, philosophy, and storytelling. I’m working on new fiction that pushes the boundaries of hard science fiction while remaining accessible to general readers. I’m developing non-fiction that makes complex philosophical concepts understandable without sacrificing depth.
The journey from USAF crypto specialist to author has been unexpected, challenging, and profoundly rewarding. Every experience—from analyzing classified intelligence to researching quantum mechanics to sharing family memories in memoir—has contributed to who I am as a writer.
If there’s a lesson in my story, it’s this: Your past doesn’t determine your future, but it does provide the raw material for transformation. The skills you develop in one context can be applied in ways you never imagined. The questions that haunt you deserve exploration, even if—especially if—they lead you far from your original path.
I didn’t set out to become an author. I set out to understand reality, to make sense of my experiences, and to share what I discovered along the way. The writing emerged naturally from that deeper purpose.
And the journey is far from over.
